What is M365 Migration?
Moving your organization’s data, application, or services from an on-premises environment or another platform to the cloud-based M365 platform which provides improved security, scalability, and flexibility.
What are the different types of migration?
1. Email Migration (IMAP / Cutover / Staged / Hybrid / 3rd party): The process of transferring email data from one email system to the Exchange Online environment within Microsoft 365. This migration is often undertaken when organizations decide to move their email infrastructure to the cloud, transitioning from on-premises email servers or other email platforms to Exchange Online.
- IMAP Migration: This method allows to migration of email data from an on-premises Exchange server or non–exchange email systems that support the IMAP protocol to MS Exchange Online.
- CUTOVER Migration: Ideal for moving your entire email organization to M365, cutover migration transfers all on-premises mailboxes to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 over a few days. The recommended mailbox count is around 150 to maintain optimal performance.
- STAGED Migration: Use staged migration if you plan to gradually migrate your organization’s mailboxes to M365 over time. Batches of on-premises mailboxes are migrated over weeks or months.
- HYBRID Migration: Hybrid deployment extends the feature-rich experience and administrative control from your existing on-premises Exchange organization to the cloud.
- THIRD-PARTY Migration: In addition to the built-in methods, third-party tools can assist in seamless email migration.
2. File Migration (SharePoint / OneDrive): Transferring files and documents from on-premises SharePoint server or other file storage systems to SharePoint Online. Also migrating individual user files and folders to One Drive for Business.
3. Collaboration and Communication Migration (Teams / Skype for Business): Migrating MS Teams data (channels, messages, and files) from one Microsoft 365 tenant to another. Transitioning from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams for unified communications.
4. Cross-tenant Migration (Tenant to Tenant): Transferring data and services from one M365 tenant to another (with or without domain migration)
5. Identity and Access Management (AAD) Migration: Transitioning user identities and access management from on-premises AD to Azure Active Directory.
6. Application Data Migration (Database & Power Platform): Migrating databases from on-premises or other cloud platforms to Azure SQL database or other Azure data services. Moving Power BI Reports, Power Apps & Power Automate flows across environments or tenants.
